HeliumOS began in early 2024 as a series of experiments, in a search for a Linux-based Operating System that is user-friendly, stable, and reliable.

Upon the discovery of Bootable Containers during the Summer of 2024, HeliumOS took shape as a desktop system built on CentOS Stream 9.

One year, an Enterprise Linux major release, and multiple pre-release versions later, HeliumOS is stable, providing a smooth experience for new and experienced Linux users alike.

As of 2025, HeliumOS is a derivative of AlmaLinux 10 with the KDE Plasma 6 desktop environment.
