Announcing HeliumOS 10 Beta!

Happy Father's Day!

Today we announce HeliumOS 10 Beta. After many months of development upstream and directly, the HeliumOS experience has stabilized in a form that is both different and similar to HeliumOS 10 Alpha.

Most importantly, HeliumOS 10 Beta is based directly on AlmaLinux 10. You may recall a post from 2024 in which we worked upstream to build the AlmaLinux bootc images. We have continued working with the rest of the excellent AlmaLinux community to maintain a reliable base for HeliumOS and other distributions in the Atomic/Bootable-Container space. If you would like to contribute at this level, check out the AlmaLinux Atomic SIG!

One common issue for users running Linux-based operating systems is configuring driver support for NVIDIA graphics cards. We're proud to announce that HeliumOS 10 Beta has out-of-the-box support for NVIDIA GPUs, no installation needed. While we cannot legally distribute NVIDIA's CUDA drivers, NVIDIA's Open GPU Kernel Modules have recently been released as open source. If you encounter any issues running HeliumOS on NVIDIA hardware (or other setups), please let us know at our Bug Tracker.

For security conscious users we offer Secure Boot support by default. Although it is necessary to disable Secure Boot to install HeliumOS 10, you may enable Secure Boot following the installation. Some users may have a BIOS with missing or expired keys, however this may be remedied by importing the Microsoft-signed, official AlmaLinux Secure Boot Certificates.

We hope to provide a smooth and reliable experience for all users, regardless of their familiarity with Linux distributions. HeliumOS 10 Beta is pre-release. Stay tuned for the official stable release of HeliumOS 10 next month!
